EXAM SCHEDULE DECEMBER 2011-STUDENT GUIDELINES

If a student has an 85 average or higher in your semester class and has 2 absences or less, he or she can be exempt.  (Nine weeks classes have different exemption rules.)  If a student has missed no days, his or her last day could be Monday, December 13th.  

On Wednesday, if a student is exempt from 4th block exam, he or she can leave at the end of 3rd block without checking out.

On Thursday, if a student is exempt from 3rd block exam, he or she can leave at the end of 2nd block without checking out. 

On Thursday, if a student is exempt from 2nd block exam but has to take 3rd block exam, he or she can wait to come to school at the beginning of 3rd block.

On Friday, if a student is exempt from 1st block exam, he or she does not have to come to school that day.
On Friday at the end of first block, students can leave without checking out.

Interact Club

HHS welcomes a new Interact Club!

Partnering with the Hernando Rotary Club, HHS began an Interact Club this Fall. With over 70 new members, they are off to a wonderful start!  Their projects this Fall include a canned food drive and Operation Christmas Child.

*Helps with field maintenance on the schools softball field - installing sprinklers and
planting rye grass
*Working to restructure the band field area to convert one practice field into two - for
the band and soccer teams
*Leads the baseball booster club with fundraising efforts and promotes an annual
scholarship each year in honor of Patrick Taylor, a former athlete at HHS.
*Volunteers in the community with events such as the Water Tower 10K.
*A positive Christian influence on his students and players.

ACT Preparation Class

Jane Ross Tutoring will be offering a ACT Preparation course at Hernando High School on December 9, 2011. The class will be broken into two sessions and will last all day in the Library. There is a charge of $60 to register. We encourage Juniors and Seniors, especially those students taking the December 10th ACT, to register for this class. The class size will be limited.  

Seniors will have first priority to register beginning the week of October 24th. It will be open to every student to register until the November 22nd deadline. See Mrs. Goss for payments. 

This is a WONDERFUL opportunity for HHS Students!!!  This organization does classes at most DCS schools along with MUS, Christian Brothers High School, and FACS in Memphis.

Academy Day


“Academy Day” hosted by Congressman Alan Nunnelee is November 5th from 9:00AM until noon at Lafayette County High School. Students interested in attending and students who would entertain the possibility of attending a Service Academy are encouraged to attend. Students in the 9th through 12th grades are the target audience but the younger a student begins to prepare to apply the better. Highly interested middle School students may also attend. A student honored with an appointment to a Service Academy benefits from an education worth in access of $250,000 at no personal expense to the student or his or her family.

Superintendent's Youth Leadership Council

Superintendent's Youth Leadership Council

SYLC is a Leadership group dedicated and financially committed by the Community Foundation of DeSoto County. It is made up of two representatives from each high school that are juniors and seniors.  Applications are made while the student's are juniors, and it is a two year commitment. Each student will learn the different styles of Leadership. The 2011-2012 school year will focus on Entrepreneurship Leadership, with a trip to New York City in April.

Applications are now being taken-deadline is August 19th. Please see the Guidance Office for applications.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our students!

April/ May Rotary Teacher and Student of the Month

Congratulation to Coach Jenkins and Vivi Ding for be nominated 
as the April/ May Rotary Teacher and Student of the month!

Student: Vivi Ding:

Vivi Ding was named the Valedictorian of the Hernando High School graduating class of 2011. She holds a 4.5 G.P.A. This coming fall she will be attending The University of Mississippi to major in Pre-Medicine/Medical Radiology. Her plans are to attend Medical School after college.  She is a very involved student at HHS. Vivi is a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Science Club, SADD, FEA, Special Tigers Club, Scrapbooking/Knitting/Ballroom Club, Student Council, and a Diamond Girl for the HHS Baseball Team.

Vivi represented HHS for the HOBY Leadership conference, served as a Bridge Builder, and tutors her fellow student after school through the Youth Advisory Club.

Vivi recently was awarded the Hernando Young Woman’s Club Scholarship and a Rotary Scholarship for HHS.

Teacher: Anthony Jenkins:

Coach Anthony Jenkins serves as Athletic Director and the Football, Power Lifting, and Track Coach for the Hernando High School. He is a long time Hernando resident, graduate of Hernando schools, and has been employed with Hernando schools for 23 years. Nine of his athletic programs were recently honored as MHSAA Academic All-Star Teams. HHS has the following teams he oversees and provides eligibility for: Football, Girls and Boys Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Golf, Track, Softball, Girls and Boys Soccer, Baseball, and Power Lifting. Coach Jenkins also serves on the MHSAA Executive Committee.

He has two daughters, both Graduates of HHS, that attend Mississippi State and Northwest MS Community College. His youngest daughter was Salutatorian of HHS for the 2010 school year. His wife is also teacher at Southaven Elementary School.

Vivi Ding was named the Valedictorian of the Hernando High School graduating class of 2011. She has a 4.5 G.P.A This coming fall she will be attending college to major in Pre-Medicine/Medical Radiology.

Melyssa Hughes was named the Salutatorian of the Hernando High School graduating class of 2011. She has a 4.47 G.P.A. and has received college credit for AP English.  Next fall, Melyssa plans to attend Freed-Hardeman University and major in Business Administration.

Ashley Hawkins
Mrs. Hawkins outstanding job as Theatre teacher for HHS has been recognized by her administration, she was chosen as the 2010-2011 Hernando High School teacher of the year. Over the last four years Mrs. Ashley Hawkins has built a thriving theatre program from the ground up. She is motivated to guide her students to be independent while producing quality theatre for the school and community. One of the things that makes Mrs. Hawkins stand out is her conviction that there is a place for all students in her program. She is teaching a lot more than theatre technique, she is teaching team work, responsibility, community, acceptance, organization, money management, time management and the most valuable thing she gives her students is the ability to be proud of a job well done. She is allowing the students to invest in themselves.
Her students and the shows she has produces have won numerous awards on the local and state level.  Most recently the theatre department just wrapped up a wonderfully fun and energetic show called “All Shook Up”.  Mrs. Hawkins is also a graduate of Hernando High School.

Rotary Student of the Month:
Will Brown
Will Brown holds a  4.02 G.P.A. at Hernando High School, as well as participating in many extra-curricular activities including Football, Choir, Knowledge Bowl, Theatre, Chess Team, and is actively involved in his youth group at Hernando United Methodist Church. He is also the founder and President of the Youth Advisory Council, which is a peer to peer tutoring group. Will has been to multiple Leadership Conferences, including the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference this past weekend as the Hernando Rotary representative.

Rural Medical Scholars Program

The Rural Medical Scholars Program is an opportunity for high school students between their junior and senior years to learn more about careers as Family Practice physicians. An intense, rigorous program, it provides significant insight into the academic requirements necessary to becoming a physician coupled with a real world look at the day-to-day practice of medicine and some of the issues relevant to the work and personal life of rural physicians.

February Rotary Student and Teacher of the Month

Congratulations to Mrs. Rona Eckles and Gabrielle Schultz for being selected Rotary Student and Teacher of the month for February 2011!


Gabrielle is the 2010-2011 STAR student for Hernando High School. She holds a 4.31 weighted grade point average and scored a 31 on the ACT. She was also named a National Merit Commended Scholar. Gabrielle has been inducted into the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and International Thespian Society. She attended Mississippi State University’s Rural Medical Scholars Program and successfully completed college courses in Biology I and Pre-Calculus. Gabrielle plays the violin in the orchestra, does costume design, and serves in five choirs. She has won awards at Playhouse on the Square’s Youth Conservatory and past president of FCA. In her spare time she volunteers for mission trips. She plans to attend the University of North Texas and major in physics.

Mrs. Eckles has taught for the past 39 years, and she will be retiring this May. During her time at Hernando High School, she has taught creative writing, humanities, mythology, PSAT and ACT test preparation, Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, and Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition.  She has also coached Future Problem Solving and Knowledge Bowl teams.  Her current Knowledge Bowl team just took home the countywide Knowledge Bowl championship this month.

She has a BA from MUW, an MA from the University of Tennessee, and post-graduate work at the University of Mississippi, University of Memphis, Millsaps, and University of Guadalajara in Mexico.
She has recently been selected as our STAR Teacher for the 2010-2011 school year. She has been honored by her students as STAR Teacher 24 times, more than any other teacher in the state, and has been inducted into the STAR Teacher Hall of Fame.

She is married to Joseph Eckles, a local potter, and have one daughter, Donan, who will

graduate from pharmacy school in May.

Soladigm, Inc. is a proud corporate citizen of the City of Olive Branch and DeSoto County, Mississippi.  Their company is committed to ensuring the continued economic development and growth of our city, county and state.  As part of that commitment, Soladigm has instituted a scholarship initiative designed to educate and develop the world’s best engineers and scientists at home in Mississippi.

In 2011, Soladigm, Inc. is awarding two, four-year, full-tuition scholarships to attend any public or private college or university in the State of Mississippi.  One scholarship is awarded to a senior student who is currently enrolled in a high school located in the City of Olive Branch and is on schedule to graduate this spring.  The other scholarship is awarded to a senior student currently enrolled in any high school located in DeSoto County, including those high schools located in the City of Olive Branch, and is on schedule to graduate this spring.  The scholarships pay 100% of the tuition costs for attending any public or private college or university in the state for up to four years/eight semesters.

Bridge Builders-Date Change

The Bridge Builders recruiter will NOW be at Hernando High School on Tuesday, February 22nd during Advisor time to speak to the 10th grade students. Ole Miss Summer Programs for High School students

Summer Academy:
The University of Mississippi’s Summer Academy gives students entering the eighth, ninth and tenth grades a taste of college life. Through the Summer Academy, students make new friends and contacts, learn time management, improve study habits and earn high school credit which can count toward high school graduation requirements. http://www.outreach.olemiss.edu/youth/summer_academy/

Summer College:
Rising 11th and 12th grade students get a head-start on their college careers by taking two courses (in a variety of subject areas). Students earn an average of 6 hours of credit transferable to any accredited college or university. Students participate in SCHS 101 Exploring Sessions, a non-credit course designed to help them explore academic and career interests as well as to learn what to expect in the college selection process. Lott Leadership Institute for High School Students:
The Summer Leadership Institute for High School Students is a partnership between the University of Mississippi's Lott Leadership Institute and the Division of Outreach's Summer College for High School Students. The goals of the program are to develop leadership skills in young citizens and prepare them for college. The Mississippi Governor's School

The MS Governor's School is taking applications for sophomores and juniors until January 31, 2011. The program is held on the campus of MS University for Women in Columbus. The students that are selected for this three week residential program receive a full scholarship for tuition, room, and board. Each scholar will receive three hours of college credit to be used at any university and a $500 scholarship to attend MS University for Women. The dates for the session are June 5-24.
