Gabrielle is the 2010-2011 STAR student for Hernando High School. She holds a 4.31 weighted grade point average and scored a 31 on the ACT. She was also named a National Merit Commended Scholar. Gabrielle has been inducted into the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and International Thespian Society. She attended Mississippi State University’s Rural Medical Scholars Program and successfully completed college courses in Biology I and Pre-Calculus. Gabrielle plays the violin in the orchestra, does costume design, and serves in five choirs. She has won awards at Playhouse on the Square’s Youth Conservatory and past president of FCA. In her spare time she volunteers for mission trips. She plans to attend the University of North Texas and major in physics.
Mrs. Eckles has taught for the past 39 years, and she will be retiring this May. During her time at Hernando High School, she has taught creative writing, humanities, mythology, PSAT and ACT test preparation, Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, and Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition. She has also coached Future Problem Solving and Knowledge Bowl teams. Her current Knowledge Bowl team just took home the countywide Knowledge Bowl championship this month.
She has a BA from MUW, an MA from the University of Tennessee, and post-graduate work at the University of Mississippi, University of Memphis, Millsaps, and University of Guadalajara in Mexico. She has recently been selected as our STAR Teacher for the 2010-2011 school year. She has been honored by her students as STAR Teacher 24 times, more than any other teacher in the state, and has been inducted into the STAR Teacher Hall of Fame.
She is married to Joseph Eckles, a local potter, and have one daughter, Donan, who will
graduate from pharmacy school in May.
